Important Themes and Symbols
In this book The Perks of Being a Wallflower there are a few main focuses and themes. One of the most important is that “We only accept the love that we think we deserve,” and that is important. It is because throughout Charlie’s letters we get the sense that he has a lot of stress and anxiety and he has a lot of resentment for himself. He accepts only the love that he thinks he deserves and so do Sam and Patrick and that is why they all work together so well in this book and as a group of friends. When they are together they all feel infinite and like they deserve more and more love. Another important theme is honest being honest with those that you love is very important to all of them. A third and final theme in the book is coming of age and how hard it can be, it shows what high school is like and how if you put yourself out there you can find good friends like Sam and Patrick, your best friend and the one who always listens and who will always have a shoulder for you to cry on.
